Title:

Common problems in Croatian wood drying practice

Research subject and fields:
Abstract:

Over the period of 18 months, in 14 different Croatian woodworking companies equipped with kiln dryers, a number of measurements were performed in order to solve different technological problems. The analyses presented in this paper may be viewed as indicators of the present state in kiln drying industry in Croatia. The technological problems can be divided in two groups:

1. Solving the problems of drying defects such as discolouration, prolonged drying time, insufficient air flow in kiln, locating the places of equipment malfunction, problems with storing dried wood, construction faults in kilns

2. Additional testing for achieving better drying quality - for example airflow on open board storage, air flow in kilns (depending on the type of piling), industrial climatisation of production plants etc.

The above mentioned problems can be more or less satisfactorily solved, providing more effort is put into solving them and more investments are undertaken in new drying facilities and equipment.
